General Competencies of the Medicine Degree

Basic competencies that students must acquire during their studies in order to gain their final qualification. 

CB1 – Students must show familiarity and understanding of knowledge in a field of study at a level beyond that acquired in secondary education, based on advanced textbooks but also including cutting-edge expertise in their chosen field of study.  

              CB2 – Students must be able to apply their acquired knowledge to their work in a professional manner and possess the competencies necessary and demonstrable through the elaboration and defense of arguments and problem-solving within their chosen field of study.  

              CB3 – Students must be able to gather and interpret relevant data (usually within their field of study) to make professional judgments that include reflections on relevant social, scientific, or ethical issues.  

              CB4 – Students must be able to transmit information, ideas, problems, and solutions to a specialized or non-specialized audience.  

              CB5 – Students must have developed the learning skills necessary to conduct further unsupervised education. 

General competencies that students must acquire during their studies in order to gain their final qualification. 

G1 – Recognize the main components of the medical profession, including ethical principles, legal responsibilities, and patient-centered professional practice.  

              G2 – Understand the importance of those principles for the patient, the wider society, and the profession, with particular attention to professional confidentiality.  

              G3 – Be able to apply the principle of social justice to their professional practice and to understand the ethical implications of health care in a changing global context.  

              G4 – Engage in a professional practice that respects the patients’ autonomy, beliefs, and culture.  

              G5 – Be able to recognize their own limitations and the importance of maintaining and updating their professional competencies, with particular attention to self-motivated learning of new knowledge and skills and striving for excellence.  

              G6 – Engage in a professional practice that respects other health care professionals, developing teamwork skills.  

              G7 – Understand and recognize the structure and normal function of the human body at the molecular, cellular, tissue, organic, and systemic level, for all stages of life and both genders.  

              G8 – Recognize the basic principles of normal human conduct and its alterations.

              G9 – Understand and recognize the effects, mechanisms, and symptoms of diseases on the structure and function of the human body.  

              G10 – Understand and recognize the causing agents and risk factors that affect health and disease evolution.  

              G11 – Understand and recognize the effects of the process of growth, maturing, and aging on individuals and their social environments. 

              G12 – Understand the basic principles of the effect, indications, and efficacy of therapeutic interventions based on available scientific evidence.  

              G13 – Obtain and prepare a medical history containing all relevant information.

              G14 – Conduct a physical examination and a mental health assessment.

              G15 – Ability to establish an initial diagnosis and a reasoned treatment strategy.  

              G16 – Recognize and deal with immediate life-threatening situations and those that do not require immediate action.  

              G17 – Establish a diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment applying the medical principles based on the best information available and attending to clinical safety. 

              G18 – Establish the most appropriate therapy for treating the most common acute and chronic conditions, as well as for terminally ill patients. 

              G19 – Consider and propose appropriate preventive measures for each clinical situation.

              G20 – Acquire the necessary clinical experience in hospitals, health care centers, or other health care settings, under supervision, as well as the basic foundations of patient-centered clinical management and the appropriate use of tests, medication, and other health care resources.  

              G21 – Listen carefully, obtain, and be able to synthesize relevant information regarding patients’ problems and understand the significance of this information.  

              G22 – Write a medical history and other medical registers in a way that is understandable to others. 

              G23 – Communicate in a clear and effective manner, both written and spoken, with patients, their relatives, media, and other professionals. 

              G24 – Acquire good interpersonal skills that enable efficient and empathetic communication with patients, their relatives, media, and other professionals. 

              G25 – Recognize the key factors that affect health in a population, from genetics to those dependent on gender, lifestyle, demography, environment, social, economic, psychological, and cultural. 

              G26 – Assume a role in preventive and protective actions against diseases, injuries, and accidents, and maintaining and promoting health, both at the individual level and within communities. 

              G27 – Recognize their role in multidisciplinary teams, assuming leadership when necessary in health care delivery and health promotion. 

              G28 – Obtain and apply epidemiological data and evaluate trends and risks for health care decision-making. 

              G29 – Have a good understanding of the different national and international health organizations and the context and constraints of different health systems. 

              G30 – Have a good understanding of the National Health System and health care legislation.

              G31 – Understand, critically assess, and be able to use different sources of clinical and biomedical information to obtain, organize, interpret, and communicate medical and scientific information.  

              G32 – Ability to use Information and Communication Technology (TIC) in clinical, therapeutic, preventive, and research activities.  

              G33 – Maintain and update the registers with all information related to the patient for subsequent analyses, preserving data confidentiality. 

              G34 – To always maintain a critical, creative, constructively skeptical, and research-orientated viewpoint in the course of professional practice. 

              G35 – Understand the importance and limitations of scientific thinking for the study, prevention, and management of diseases. 

              G36 – Ability to formulate hypotheses, collect and critically assess information in order to solve problems, following a scientific method. 

              G37 – Acquire the necessary training to conduct research activities.
