General Information

The general information about the PhD Programs, admission and registration, fees, regulations, procedures, monitoring, calls and common procedures can be found on the website of the International Doctoral School of the UCLM EID-UCLM: eid.uclm.es

  • Contact: International Doctoral School: doctorado@uclm.es
  • This PhD program does not include formal or compulsory classroom training. The training phase must be included in the master's degree that give access to the PhD program which starts directly at the research phase that is, to the completion of the Doctoral Thesis. The EID-UCLM offers optional training activities. Training activities (participation in congresses, publication of papers, methodological training activities, mobility programs, etc.), as well as the Research Plan must be agreed with the thesis director and included each year in the Register of Activities (RAPI).
  • For this PhD Program it is essential that the initial research plan must be endorsed by a researcher of the Program in the Presentation Document included in the documentation. Without this endorsement it will not be possible to admit you to the Program. A future PhD student must contact the doctor professor through the UCLM directory or departmental websites. If there is no previous contact through a master´s degree, it is important to check the different interests’ areas of the professors by using databases such as Academic Google, Dialnet, etc.

This PhD program is multidisciplinary, and it integrates different research areas of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences: Education from different UCLM departments divided into five teams:

  • GROUP 1: MATERIAL, SOCIO-POLITICAL AND CULTURAL HISTORY: FROM PREHISTORY TO THE PRESENT.
  • GROUP 2: PHILOSOPHICAL STUDIES.
  • GROUP 3: RESEARCH IN ARTS AND COMMUNICATION.
  • GROUP 4: EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH AND INNOVATION.
  • GROUP 5: ANALYSIS AND LAND USE PLANNING.

EID-UCLM has an attention program for international students which facilitates all the different procedures from abroad.

The Academic Commission of the PhD Program has an academic function linked to admission, the renewal of academic supervision and procedures for the defense of doctoral theses. Formal matters are handled by the International Doctoral School of the UCLM.

Consult the possibility of converting your doctoral thesis into an International Doctorate, a Thesis in Cotutela Regime with a foreign university, a Thesis by compendium of publications and other modalities. Check the conditions at the EID-UCLM.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM:

  1. To consolidate the different research groups and existing research lines and create new perspectives that reinforce the multidisciplinary perspective of the different research. This PhD program is made up of a total of 160 professors who together have 76 active research projects, most of which are state competitive calls of the I+D+I plan.
  2. To deepen the multidisciplinary nature of the doctoral training process so that versatility is an added value in this young university that must compete with new challenges to consolidate its contribution to a society inevitably based on knowledge.
  3. To promote the socioeconomic and cultural characteristics and potential of the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha. To meet this objective, the contents and structure of the Doctoral Program in Humanities, Arts and Education is in line with the function that the University of Castilla-La Mancha has fulfilled and continues to fulfill as a social locomotive in the formation of human capital in an Autonomous Community with so many deficits accumulated over centuries of silence.
  4. To promote the internationalization of our University in the Postgraduate area, so that the mobility programs in the Doctorate will be strengthened with a redoubled effort not only to open new horizons to UCLM graduates but also to turn the UCLM into a focus of attraction for students from other countries.

In conclusion, this Doctoral Program is configured around the following multidisciplinary contents:

  1. Research, protection and conservation of historical, artistic, archaeological and cultural heritage.
  2. Research on the historical formation and the social, cultural and political construction of societies in the different historical stages, from Prehistory to the Present Time.
  3. Research on educational and learning processes and methodologies at all levels of training, as well as the resulting technical applications, as this is a field that is as specific as it is inseparable from the humanistic supports of any innovation in knowledge.
  4. Research on artistic and literary creations in their various historical stages and in the present, as well as in their different modalities.
  5. Artistic research based on practice, in accordance with the new internationally consolidated methodological approaches.
  6. Intercultural and Philological Studies with research from diverse and multiple perspectives to deepen the cultural, historical, social, etc. Exchanges.
  7. Artistic research based on practice, in line with new research applied to land use planning and environmental issues related to both physical-ecological phenomena and sustainable development activities.

The annual enrolement cost depends on the aplicable fees, aprobed by the Regional Government in Castilla-La Mancha. Click here to know the corresponding to the current academic year.

Access and admision

PROFILE OF ADMISSION TO THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM IN RESEARCH IN HUMANITIES, ARTS AND EDUCATION:

The Doctoral Program in Humanities, Arts and Education at the University of Castilla-La Mancha offers 40 places, 25 full-time and 15 part-time. In general, students in this Doctoral Program must have a humanistic profile with an interest in researching topics related to the disciplines that fall under the heading of "Humanities, Arts and Education".

Specifically, the Doctorate is aimed at students with previous training not only at the Bachelor's but also at the Master's level in some of the humanistic and social disciplines covered by this Program, such as History, Art History, Fine Arts, Literature, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Education, Humanities, Geography, Journalism and Communication.

Students with other educational profiles (philosophical, anthropological, sociological, scientific, technical, legal, etc.) who are interested in research and interdisciplinary deepening in the aforementioned areas of Arts, Humanities and Education will also be admitted, in accordance with the objectives of this doctoral program, and such admission will be made with the requirement of the corresponding and appropriate complementary training established for each case by the Academic Committee of the Doctorate.

Access requirements and admission criteria.

In accordance with the provisions of Article 6 and the second section of the second additional provision of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28 and Article 6 of the Regulations for Doctoral Studies at the UCL approved by the Governing Council on November 20, 2012, those who are in one of the situations specified in the section "Access for new doctoral students" in this link can access an official doctoral program.

Application and admission criteria.

The admission criteria will be those established in the aforementioned Regulations for Doctoral Studies at the UCLM, which are as follows:

  • The suitability of the studies that allow access to the third cycle, always in relation to the object of research on which he/she wishes to prepare his/her doctoral thesis.
  • The applicant's curriculum vitae.
  • The applicant's dedication to carry out his/her doctoral thesis work and the complementary training that is accredited.
  • In general, the criteria established by the academic committee, and which must have been reflected in the program's verification report by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program, publicizing them through the information systems prior to access and admission of students.

In this sense, the following weighting of the contents of the Curriculum of the applicants is established:

  • FOR ACCESS to the Doctoral Program, the ACADEMIC ACADEMIC RECORD WILL BE VALUED WITH 75%, which will be broken down into 50% FOR THE ACADEMIC RECORD OF THE MASTER'S DEGREE with which access and 25% for the academic record of the GRADUATE DEGREE OR EQUIVALENT.
  • 15% for the knowledge of a LANGUAGE USUALLY USED IN THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY with a MINIMUM level B.1, according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages. In any case, it must be accredited before the reading of the doctoral thesis. If the student enrolls for the Doctorate in any of THE MODERN LANGUAGES, THE ACCREDITATION OF LEVEL C.1 IN THE CORRESPONDING LANGUAGE WILL BE REQUIRED.
  • 10% for the pre-doctoral curriculum (scholarships, stays in other university centers in previous educational cycles, other languages, various merits, etc.).

* THE ADMISSION CRITERIA AND PROCEDURES FOR PART-TIME STUDENTS WILL BE THE SAME AS THOSE CONTEMPLATED FOR FULL-TIME STUDENTS.

Admission:

The Academic Committee of the Program must decide on the admission of the applicant within the period determined in the calendar established for each academic year by the International Doctoral School of the UCLM.

IN THE CASE OF STUDENTS WHO LACK THE COMPLETE PREVIOUS TRAINING DEFINED IN THE RECOMMENDED ADMISSION PROFILE OF THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM IN HUMANITIES, ARTS AND EDUCATION, THE ACADEMIC COMMITTEE OF THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM MAY INCLUDE AS A REQUIREMENT FOR ADMISSION THE REQUIREMENT OF SPECIFIC TRAINING COMPLEMENTS TO ALL CANDIDATES WHOSE TRAINING COMES FROM OTHER MASTERS OTHER THAN THOSE SPECIFICALLY ESTABLISHED AS RESEARCH MASTERS IN SOME OF THE AREAS OF THE HUMANITIES, ARTS AND EDUCATION. THIS COMPLEMENTARY TRAINING WILL CONSIST IN THE COMPLETION OF METHODOLOGICAL COURSES RELATED IN THE MEMORIAL OF THIS DOCTORATE and which are detailed below. This complementary training will in no case exceed the 18 credits required, and in any case the contents and training activities, as well as their evaluation, will be those of the subjects indicated as training complements in accordance with what is established in the corresponding teaching guides of the respective subjects, whether of Degree or of the Masters taught in the Faculties that make up this Doctoral Program. These training complements will have to be carried out OBLIGATORY DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF ACADEMIC TUTORSHIP OR, IF THE DOCTORATE IS A PART-TIME DOCTORATE, DURING TWO YEARS OF TUTORSHIP.

  • If the agreement of the academic committee is in favor of admission, the committee will assign a doctoral tutor, and must communicate this to both the applicant and the tutor.
  • If the committee's decision is against admission, it must inform the applicant and the International Doctoral School, indicating the reasons for its refusal based on the criteria indicated in the previous article. Applicants who meet the requirements and are not admitted, if applicable, may file a complaint with the International Doctoral School, which will obtain the reports it deems appropriate for its resolution.
  • In the case of students with special educational needs derived from disability, the appropriate support and counseling services will be established, which will evaluate the need for possible curricular adaptations, itineraries or alternative studies. Specifically, the University of Castilla-La Mancha UCLM contemplates support and counseling services for students with specific educational needs arising from disability, for which it is sufficient at this time to refer to the link http://www.uclm.es/organos/vic_estudiantes/saed/contacto.asp.

The Regulations for Doctoral Studies at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Governing Council Agreement of November 20, 2012) establishes in its Article 13 on the doctoral thesis the following:

  • The doctoral thesis will consist of an original research work on a subject related to the scientific, technical or artistic field proper to the doctoral program carried out by the student and which will qualify him/her for autonomous work in the field of R+D+i.
  • If authorized by the corresponding academic committee, the thesis may also be presented in the form of a compendium of articles in which the doctoral student is a relevant author. The requirements and conditions for this type of thesis shall be established by the academic committee of each doctoral program.

Pursuant to said provision, the Academic Committee of the doctoral program in research in Humanities, Arts and Education of the UCLM defined the requirements and conditions for the modality of presentation of a thesis with the format of a compendium of articles on January 19, 2014. In accordance with what was agreed by the Steering Committee of the International Doctoral School of the UCLM, at its meeting of June 7, 2016, the requirements for submitting the doctoral thesis in the form of a compendium of publications are readjusted, and are, therefore, as follows:

  1. The set of works must be related to the doctoral thesis project in programs regulated by RD 1393/2007 or earlier, or to the research plan that appears in the document of activities of the doctoral student in programs regulated by RD 99/2011. In this sense, taking into account the specificity of the areas included in this doctorate in Humanities, Arts and Education, the literalness of the formula defined as "compendium of articles", should be interpreted as the compendium of original research work that may be published as articles in indexed journals, as chapters in books or as monographs in publishers of academic prestige. With regard to the area of the Arts, the equivalences established by the National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity (CNEAI) will be applied.
  2. The presentation of a doctoral thesis in the modality of already published works will conform to the following characteristics.
  1. Two options are established:

First option: compendium of at least three original articles or book chapters published or accepted for publication on the date of application for admission to the doctoral thesis. If there is co-authorship, the doctoral student must appear first in these publications, so that his or her relevance in the elaboration of the research is evident. In this sense, the director of the thesis must justify the complexity of the topic as well as the extension of the work so that the thesis is part of a shared research, and also certify the contribution and degree of authorship of the person who opts for the doctoral degree. Both the scientific justification and the academic certification of such conditions, by the thesis director, will be presented together with the documentation required for the defense of the thesis.

  2. Second option: an original book authored exclusively by the doctoral candidate.
  3. The three required articles must be published or accepted in indexed journals using as a reference the indications of quality established for the areas of History, Geography, Arts, Philosophy, Philology and Linguistics and for Social, Political, Behavioral and Educational Sciences by the Resolution of November 26, 2014 of the National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity ("BOE" no. 290, of December 1, 2014) and in the resolutions that may be made hereinafter by the CNEAI on evaluation of research activity for the areas included in this Doctoral Program. In the case of a book or book chapters, it will be required that its publication is in publishers of recognized prestige that have systems of selection of originals by the method of external evaluation or blind peer review, and the Academic Committee may require a report where these aspects are stated and, in any case, the provisions of the aforementioned CNEAI resolution will also be taken into account, which specifies the need to assess the prestige of the publisher (based, for example, on the Scholarly Publishers Indicators or other similar indicators), the editors and the reviews obtained in specialized scientific journals as indications of quality. In all cases, the work must have been published or accepted for publication after the first enrollment of the academic tutor. Up to two articles or book chapters that have not yet been published will be considered valid, provided that they have been accepted for publication, which must be accredited with proof from the editor-in-chief of the journal or publishing house.
  4. The presentation of this type of thesis must be accompanied by a report from the director specifying the impact factor of the journals in which the articles are published or the scientific prestige of the corresponding publishers, as well as the scientific prestige of the corresponding journals.
  5. The written authorization of the other co-authors, if any, to present the corresponding work as a thesis must also be attached to the thesis. In this authorization, they will state that they renounce presenting these works as part of another thesis, and they will also specify the work developed by the doctoral student in the respective works.
  6. The doctoral student must consider that the co-authors of the publications will not be able to be part of the Thesis Tribunal based on the established grounds for abstention and recusal of the law of administrative procedure.
  7. The academic committee of the Doctorate of Research in Humanities, Arts and Education will study the documentation provided by the doctoral student and the concurrence of the requirements established above to decide whether the presentation of the doctoral thesis in this format by compendium of publications is appropriate.

3.- In this type of thesis by compendium of publications, the doctoral candidate will prepare his or her doctoral thesis document with at least the following sections:

  1. A general introduction to justify the unity of a thesis as a compendium of already published works and to explain the hypothesis, the theoretical framework and the general objectives to clarify the existing relationship between the different publications and their methodological coherence with a line of research.
  2. The central core of the thesis will consist of a complete copy of the publications, with detailed references to the journal or publisher, stating the name and affiliation of the co-authors, if any, and including the D.O.I., if any, as a guarantee of the doctoral candidate's authorship and the originality of the work.
  3. The thesis will contain a chapter presenting a global summary of the results and a discussion of them, as well as the conclusions with the most relevant aspects of the research activities developed during the doctorate. This will not be necessary in the case of submitting an original book which is supposed to include these issues.
Quality

According to the internal quality assurance system of the doctoral programs of the UCLM, each Doctoral Program has a Quality Assurance Committee. In the case of the Doctoral Program in Research in Humanities, Arts and Education, it is composed of:

  • The Coordinator of the program, who will act as president of the Commission: Matías Barchino Pérez.
  • Two researchers working within the program, one of whom will act as secretary: Juan José Pastor Comín (secretary) and Arsenio Jesús Moya Guijarro.
  • A doctoral student of the doctoral program: Ernesto Sierra Delgado.
  • A member of the administration and services staff: Concepción Astilleros.

Optionally, a representative of the entities or companies with which a collaboration agreement has been established may be included.

The Internal Quality Assurance Committee will meet at least twice a year and will develop the following functions:

  • Analyze the results of the procedures that compose the SGICPD.
  • Create the Annual Improvement Plan and the Annual Monitoring Report for the Program.
  • To submit the above documents to the Steering Committee of the International Doctoral School for its approval.
  • Any other duties assigned to it by this document or by the procedures for its development.
